SS SPRING

screaming silence spring 2011

firstly, i must apologize for my mistreatment of the(fashion)hash - the spanish have truly taken over my world in the best way possible. i hope you all could sustain your (fashion)high while i was gone, and if not, this bitch is BACK with a whole lot of (fashion)drogas. leading the parade is the newest and long awaited edition of SCREAMING SILENCE (throwback to this and this if you need help remembering). i hold this issue near and dear, as i, and this very blog, are featured! make sure to spend lots of time with this one, people. many thanks to the extraordinary tyler ferguson for the opportunity!

and if you don't have time to (fashion)blaze to the whole thing right now ... check out my article below!

(FASHION)HASH is not your typical drug: your parents don’t warn you against it, the police dogs don’t sniff your trunk for it, and TSA doesn’t scan your privates for it. Yet (fashion)hash is the most desirable paraphernalia a fashionista/o can smuggle - its legality does not minimize its potency. To put it plainly -  (fashion)hash get’s you high as hell. It’s my welcomed addiction as well as the title of my blog.

Being bred in a state that’s most famous for beer, some traitor of a football player, and its magnitude of farm animals, “high fashion” and “style” were certainly not part of the daily vocabulary growing up. However, my parents always allowed me to dress myself, a key part of my childhood to which I dedicate my aesthetic to today. While I didn’t always get it right (body glitter and dog tags are admittedly featured in school pictures), I still thank and Tom and Lynn for letting me wave my freak flag all over our conservative suburban neighborhood. My near-psychotic obsession with fashion began with their acceptance of my taste in all things diva.

While I grew out of denim jumpsuits and sparkly eye shadow (for the most part), my style has always remained distinct. New York City reeked of home more than Wisconsin Mac and Cheese; I remember the flight to La Guardia more than I remember graduating High School. I received some formal fashion education at the London College of Fashion and continue to soak up the good stuff in New York via jobs, internships, freelancing, and most importantly, my blog.

The best way to explain The (Fashion)Hash is this: I believe that one should never lose their (fashion) high. The (Fashion)Hash is how I avoid a come-down, with constant doses of inspiration and style. Fashion is many things: art, commerce, expression, and more recently, with the eruption of the blogosphere, fashion has become a conversation. Connecting with others who are just as fashion-possessed is truly a gift, and I get participation points via my very own domain name. For me, fashion is my drug (not to be confused with “anti-drug”), and I use constantly. This may be a simple play on words, but when your favorite part of the day is getting dressed, it makes perfect sense.

I’ve been asked, “Hannah, why fashion?” enough that my response has become almost robotic. Fashion is part of everyone’s lives, whether it’s appreciated or not. It’s influence as an industry and the dedication and vision of the artists involved goes unnoticed by many. To quote the best movie-bitch ever, “You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don't know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean. You're also blindly unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St. Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room”. Thank you, Miranda Priestly, for being so right.

I believe that transcendence is key within any medium. Creating a work of art that captures the imagination of anyone is valid in my book. As a blogger, magazine enthusiast, and overall right-brainer, I feel the (fashion)highest when I discover brilliant fashion photography. Many times people see beautiful clothes and forget to admire the immense talent required in producing the image. Photography is arguably the most important aspect of my site - while fashion is the cream in my venti latte, the clothes on my back would be forgotten without an outstanding image to preserve their message. I communicate, inspire, and challenge through photos. Let’s face it; my readers aren’t coming back for the commentary.

Right now, I’m into bold lips; I’m talking orange, purple, the works. Spring, for me, will be about little white dresses and oversize hats. Black on black on black is always in no matter the season (bonus points for texture variety). You wear one watch, I wear four (on the same wrist). Neutrals and neons were made for each other, as are leather and fur. It’s metallic? I’ll take it! I love my collection of moschino scarves and $3 tees equally. I snagged my Dad’s varsity jacket and my Mom’s printed maxi dress from the depths of my attic, and yes, I wear them together. I will rock the same outfit days in a row, and my suede biker jacket may be the dankest (fashion)hash in my closet. I’ll swear to all of this today, but ask me tomorrow and you may hear something totally different.

Ultimately, (fashion)hash is not what’s “trending”. It’s the vintage dress that makes you feel like a bazillion dollars. It’s your grandpa’s fedora that goes with everything. It’s the confidence you exude and the care you take in your own presentation. It’s what motivates you to be resourceful, irreplaceable, and utterly, shamelessly you. So let’s go get (fashion)high – it’s free and it’s legal.

(allsaints men's tee, givenchy printed lips #1)

i know it doesn't look like it in these crap shots, but i (or my stylist, rather) chopped 3+ inches off these locks. got me some angle, got me some highlights, and got me some happy. i never thought i'd say this, but this shit got me feeling like willow. except older and significantly less coordinated.
