HASH OF THE MONTH - CHARLOTTE RUTHERFORD

Photobucket
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHARLOTTE RUTHERFORD

i was introduced to charlotte's work by a previous hash of the month-er (and new friend IRL) jacqueline. "check her out, she's really sweet!", so i did, and while charlotte's personality definitely bubbles, her photography EXPLODES.

i immediately noticed charlotte's aptitude for manipulation; she adds sequins and sparkles and colors and prints to her photography and with that, some seriously psychadelic escapism. her work is intricate yet chaotic, providing the viewer with context at first glance and an adventure in the second (this glance easily becoming a long, devoted gaze). charlotte has her finger on the pulse of what's fashionably-eccentric, and i love discovering that the girl behind the lens is equally kooky. call me hooked! read on to get your fix of charlotte rutherford, october's hash of the month.

tell me a little bit about yourself?
i’m charlotte and i am now twenty (crycrycry). i live in norfolk which is relatively rural and close to beaches and i really like it.

do you have a favorite memory from a shoot?
i like the reactions from passers by when shooting on location…we were shooting on a field in august and there was a fair for some kind of hunting thing and a farmer got really aggressive and horrible to us because he thought we were undercover trying to sabotage his fair.

what is your favorite thing about photography? your least favorite? what is the most challenging?
my favourite thing is thinking of an idea and setting up a shoot visually, i'm really not good at organizing people so working out the logistics and times/plans for a shoot is definitely most challenging!

what are some of your other interests?
i really love watching cartoons and but i don't really have other hobbies as such. listening to music is a given but i also love dancing around and watching music videos. i also really love michael jackson.

do you have any recommendations for young photographers like yourself?
i think it is important to keep in mind why you started taking photos and not to get caught up in wanting to be successful. also just photographing what you want to, not what looks current/what other people are doing.

where do you see yourself in 10 years?
i really really don't know, i want to have a really fabulous house with a balcony and that’s all really. photography-wise hopefully i can do exactly what i'm doing now but getting booked to shoot something in my style with full creative control :)

what have been your most exciting opportunities thus far? what are you looking forward to?
i have a few exciting opportunities which i am really thankful for but i'm most excited about a video I just shot for crystal bats. it’s my first proper video and it looks exactly how i had wanted it to which i’m happy about. i've been lucky to shoot some musicians and producers this year which i didn't realize i would be interested in but actually really love it, so that really changed my career plans!

how did you develop your aesthetic?
i think the more you shoot the more you become aware of what you like and dislike. if i look at my photos from a year ago it's completely different and, to me, looks very confused. i think i am starting to understand how to take a photo that reflects me and am a lot more assured about my photos, without the need of good feedback from people.

what constitutes the perfect image, in your opinion?
lots of glitter, lots of colour, lots of exaggeration!

if you had no limitations on a photoshoot, what would do?
this is like the impossible question, because i always base my ideas on something which i have available to me. if i had an unlimited budget and time though i’d make a film rather than take a photo, for sure. probably go to tokyo, probably have loads of babes!

what are your most desirable collaborations?
i would love to be able to design a set for a game show, that’s quite implausible and not really a collaboration though! also would like to shoot with a gymnastic squad aaaaaaaand i’d really love to photograph sophie ellis bextor!!!!

aside from your camera, what are five things that you can’t live without?
twin peaks, my boyfriendddddd, scritti politti, glittery sequiny gold things, oh and my little brother reilly (he is so fabulous).
