HASH OF THE MONTH - KIMI SELFRIDGE

Photobucket

PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIMI SELFRIDGE OF TAN CAMERA

there's been quite a bit of kimi love happening on T(F)H lately, and with good reason; miss selfridge is damn good at what she does, a visual artist with a knack for film photography, on top of being super chill to hang with. what i find so interesting about kimi's work is that there is no editing involved; shot, processed, and scanned, her photography never sees an adjustment layer. how, despite the reality of the saturation and light and location, she manages to capture a dream world of her own creation, a vibe that lies somewhere between brooklyn, california, and home. yes, her subjects are fashionable, of course they are when kimi styles each look with her own vintage treasures, but instead of pulling focus, the clothes service her ongoing story, "this is our youth". with many more collaborations in the works, i figured it was high time to give her a proper introduction... meet kimi selfridge, january's hash of the month!

tell me a little bit about yourself?
i’m a 25 year old visual artist, originally from southern California, currently residing in Brooklyn, NY.

when did you first discover your passion for photography?
i always had a disposable or automatic 35mm camera with me as a kid, but i think i realized my talent for photography around age 16.

what do you prefer – film or digital?
film. i love the dimension and texture in a film photograph.

who or what has influenced your photography the most?
i'm open to the world around me, and when something inspires me, it influences me. i'm attracted to many different mediums, whether it be visual art, music, comedy, poetry, a concrete wall, a business card, the list is infinite. the biggest influence in my life is the artist julie verhoeven, she's an illustrator and mixed media artist, and along with being totally fearless, she trusts her intuition as part of her process. i love that, and find intuition to be the most crucial ingredient in my artistic process.

do you have a favorite memory from a shoot?
during a photoshoot with my friend will (of the band fort lean), i had this idea to use sprinkles i found in his kitchen as a prop. he was very commited to being as serious as possible with wet sprinkles all over his face. needless to say, i was laughing at him so hard, i had to momentarily pause the shoot to collect myself.

what's your favorite thing about photography?
my favorite thing about photography is the experiment that is naturally occurring between myself and my subject.

Photobucket Photobucket

what is the most challenging?
lighting.

what are some of your other interests?
thrifting! i have a huge collection of vintage pieces that I use to style my photo shoots. i also just adopted a husky/german shepherd dog and am completely obsessed... her name is agnes.

do you have any recommendations for young photographers like yourself?
never stop shooting!

describe yourself in three words?
intuitive, focused, comical

the first photographer that comes to mind?
juergen teller. he is so consistent, i love that everything he does is so clearly by him.

Photobucket

what are you looking forward to?
working on a larger scale.

when do you feel the most (fashion)high?
when i’m thrifting! it’s a religious experience for me.

what constitutes the perfect image, in your opinion?
balance, in regards to color, texture, spacing, expression, and lighting.

Photobucket Photobucket

if you had no limitations on a photoshoot, what would do?
i would do a multi-country bus roadtrip, and let the photo shoots happen naturally along the way.

aside from your camera, what are five things that you can’t live without?
my boyfriend ricky, my new dog agnes, my yellow ipod, my perfectly soft vintage black leather jacket, and purple mascara.

  1. Wow. So glad you posted this. I've actually seen a few of these photos floating around the web, but didn't know the photographer.

Been really into cool shots, lately, and hers are so organic, without being mundane. That's a tough 'balance', if you will - and she strikes it perfectly.

    Thanks for doing this.
